News: Pre-Podgressive – Behind The Scenes EP035

Hey there or as we say in swedish, Tja tja bloggeeen!

Welcome back to my second ”Pre-Podgressive” blog. I hope that you liked the last episode and my blog post. If you are listening to my shows and reading my stuff here and are from a place where the sun is shining and the temperature is above 20 celcius. Could you send us cold and wet sweedes a sun, Please?! Remember not to wrap it in to something that might be flamable. As I told you last time about the rain.. Yeah, it has been raining since then and we are not singing in the rain!!
Let’s just talk about some happy stuff and forget about the weather..

The Super Awesome Contest

I had an fantastic surprise for not so long ago. I was participating in a contest at Facebook where the task was simple. Just share a link and then wait a while for a random winner. The winner got a super cool Roland TB-303, TR-909 & TR-808 pillow bundle. So one day, just on an ordinary monday in my office. I was checking out some new tweets and got a really surprised. Analog Sweden (The Company behind the pillows) had sent me a tweet and asking me to contact them and claim my pillows. SUPERFRÄÄÄSHT! That’s a pretty awsome word in swedish btw.

I was talking to Patric about this and he told me to contact them again and ask if they would like to collaborate with us and have a similar contest on the podcast. Aand yeah, there will be a pillow contest in the upcoming podcast!

Question Regarding Podcast Subscription – What Is It, How Does It Work?

I’ve got many questions about subscriptions and I think it’s time for me to make this clear for you that doesn’t really know what it is.

So, the basics of podcasting is that you can listen when you wan’t and go back and listen to earlier episodes and so on.
But think that if you would like to just click a button for an automatic update when you are sitting on a bus, subway or by foot to check if there are any new episodes aviable on your favorite podcasts. Aaah! That’s the beauty of subscriptions. And the best part is that it’s really simple to set up.
I bet that the majority of you have a smartphone. An iPhone, Android device or even a Windows mobile. Let’s start with the popular iPhone. Simlply click on the ”subscribe on iTunes” button on my site (Click on the button ”Tracklists and Comments” button to get all the alternatives for listening) and it’s done. Follow instructions and the podcast will be downloaded and followed. The best part is that if you subscribe to several podcasts. Just click on the update button on your iPhones iTunes and it will check for new episodes for all your subscriptions. Great isn’t it!?
If you are on a Android device. Just get your favorite mediaplayer with podcast support for an example search for google listen on the google play market. Click, ”set up a new podcast” and write http://podgressive.com/feed/. Thats it!

Roadtrip To Hedemora

We have been talking about the interviews again. It’s always such a massive project and takes a lot of effort to get it really good. Patric and me have been planning to do some different types of them in the future. Some big and some small and more easy. Just to have them more often. Sometimes an article and other times just for the podcast. I have been following a fantastic talent and an really good pianist for some time and we just had to see her studio irl. So, this project got even bigger than before. We took my car and went to Hedemora (Small town in Sweden) to visit miss Lily V Nine. I’m really looking forward to the final result that Patric is actually working on it right this moment. There will be some of that in the podcast as well so don’t miss it!

#Podgressive EP035 – Artists

I’m really glad to announce theese two lads for the podcast. Both of them are seniors in the scene and has been around for a while. First up is our local artist, Marcus Stork. Dusting of his old techno records we will be pulled back in time to the very heart of the swedish techno era! Next up in line is our local super artist. I remember Kambiz booking him to his club Ambition for a long time ago and there where like 8 people in the ”crowd”. Well, his curve peak is in the top and by playing in huge arenas and touring around the world, delivering fantastic tunes mr Marcus Schossow is a lift for this show! As for me, well.. There will be a part of lovely progressive tunes that has been on repeat while working these past months together with some dark techno-ish beats and building up to uplifting. I was also listening to some old classic tunes and I just had to follow the stream and start to pick a classic tune for each month. Let’s see if it works :)

TOP10 – October 2012

So, it’s time for the monthly section where I have selected my top 10 tunes of this month. Some of them are released and some not. I’m not just after the newest stuff. This is just something that has made my month.

  1. 1. It took me some time for me to come into the right mood and decide this months nr uno. But this track is just faaantastic! It grows each and every time I listen to the tune! Jeremy Olander is a local talent from Stockholm, Sweden. He is born 1987 in the US and he’s truly a forthcoming star and has all ready a guestmix at the BBC Radio 1 show by Tall Paul. I heard this for the first time on the Eric Prydz podcast and just had to have it!
  2. Markus Schulz feat. Seri – Love Rain Down (Myon & Shane 54 Summer of love Mix) [Couldn’t find the dub mix at YT. Check it out!]
  3. Porter Robinson – Language (Original Mix)
  4. Kent – Taxmannen (Eric Prydz Private Remix)
  5. Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner – Channel 42
  6. Hardwell – Encoded (Dada Life Remix)
  7. Deadmau5 – Fn Pig (Original Mix)
  8. Hot Chip – Flutes (Sasha Remix)
  9. Koen Groeneveld – Ditsjz (2012 Remix)

See ya!

Classic FTW: Filo & Peri feat. Fisher – Ordinary Moment

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JppO4utPAyE&w=680&h=510]

This is the 30th article in the series, so how do you celebrate that? I did by taking some time off writing.
This week’s featured track is Filo & Peri featuring FisherOrdinary Moment (Main Mix). (Buy on Itunes)

Lyrics:

All I want
Is an ordinary moment here with you
No distractions

Tell the world
That you’re busy doing nothing
Cancel everything
Let it go

Meet me in the kitchen at the table
I just want to be alone with you
Stare into the eyes I’ve been missing
Don’t say anything
You don’t need to

All I want
Is an ordinary moment here with you
No distractions

Tell the world
That you’re busy doing nothing
Cancel everything
Let it go

Meet me in the kitchen at the table
I just want to be alone with you

Stare into the eyes I’ve been missing
Don’t say anything
You don’t need to

Do you know?

We’ve been working so much
We’re forgetting to touch
What have we become?

Do you know that it’s a crime
To never find the time to love

We’ve been working so much
We’re forgetting to touch
What have we become?

Do you know that it’s a crime
To never find the time to… to… lo-lo-love

Goosebump points:
01:27 when the driving bass kicks in.
01:56 when the main vocals kicks in
05:02 when the piano starts in the breakdown
05:18 when the chorus starts
05:44 when the guitar kicks in
06:00 when the main melody kick in again

American born Domenick Filopei and Bo Pericic started making music back in 2003. Back then, there wasn’t many americans who you thought about when you talked about EDM/Dancemusic as the whole dancemusic-scene, especially trancemusic were mostly europeans. The only big names back then from America was BT, Gabriel & Dresden and Markus Schulz but since their success, many new names has risen to superstar-level.

But let’s get back to Filo & Peri.

The combination of Filo’s rock-influences with Peri’s dance-oriented influecens was early a proclaimed as a match made in heaven. Their first release, Elevation/Juicy got signed to Armin Van Buuren’s label, A State Of Trance which in itself is a sign of quality.

Their second release, I:95/Spectrum was even better, especially the driving bassline and the soothing piano in I:95 after the breakdown. I:95 was one of Paul Van Dyk’s hidden gems that he used to play back in the days.

The followup, © 1999/Radiate was another smash and for long a favourite for DJ’s like Armin Van Buuren, Judge Jules and Envio.

Their first vocal track, the stompin’ trancer Dance With A Devil (with singer Tiff Lacey) was another commercial hit and came with a huge remix-package from DJ Shog, Serge Devant and Flipside.

The 2005 collaboration with Mike Foyle ended up in Luana, an energetic trance with a beautiful breakdown. Just love the use of the piano in all kinds of music, especially when it’s played by Mike Foyle.

Their second vocal track, Closer Now (with singer Fisher) got alot of attention, especially by Paul Van Dyk who signed it for his Politics Of Dancing 2-compilation.

Their next track, Ordinary Moment (with singer Fisher) was even signed to Vandit Records and IMHO one of their best offers so far. I’ve always been a sucker for Fisher’s voice, especially in this track. Also listen after 05.00 when the breakdown starts with that piano and her voice. When the guitar comes in shortly after that, it’s pure magic!

The followup to the wonderful trancer Ordinary Moment was actually a bootleg of Doobie Brothers’s old hit, Long Train Runnin’. The housy bootleg never got an official release but was later released with re-sung vocals by Todd Plant.

One of their biggest hits to date was the 2007 hit The Anthem (with singer Eric Lumiere). The original version is a tight production, just like Ordinary Moment but I prefer the John O’Callaghan-remix as it skips the normal lyrics and only go for the verse which makes the track dub-like. I just love the guitar in the breakdown, so epic!

The followup, Shine On (with singer Eric Lumiere) is a really great track with awesome vocal and U2-like guitar-riffs. I prefer the Aly & Fila-remix though as it’s more uplifting.

Soul And The Sun (with Eric Lumiere) has some really epic vocals, especially in the breakdown. I prefer the Guiseppe Ottaviani-remix and also really dig the more progressive Jerome Isma-Ae Remix.

The 2009 hit Ashley (with singer Aruna) is another one of Filo & Peris biggest hits. The sweet vocals by Aruna is to die for and certainly a goosebump-song, especially the Alex M.O.R.P.H.-remix.

2009 was also the year that Filo & Peri’s first artist album came out. Nightplay was a pretty decent 15-track album containing all the hits to date and also a few new ones.

There were also a couple of EP’s released like Drops Of Jupiter and Drops Of Jupiter Remixed.

The next vocal track, Off The Hook (with singer Eric Lumiere) came out in 2010 and didn’t really make any big impression on me. It’s not bad at all but just went by me music-wise. The same goes for the rest of Filo & Peri’s releases except for This Night (with singer Audrey Gallagher) which I really liked. This Night came with sweet remixes from Dash Berlin, Max Graham & Alex M.O.R.P.H. just to name a few.

The last track I liked from Filo & Peri was the collaboration with Sara Crockett & Goodbye Pluto on The Hardest Thing. It differs in sound from the previous tracks as its more Pop-ish. Love the Norin & Rad Remix though.

IMHO, Filo & Peri’s glory days were from 2006-2009 and at this period they released some major tracks which in my books all are classics. I love the vocal collaborations with Eric Lumiere, Fisher & Aruna and how their vocals together with Filo & Peri’s tracks is a match made in heaven.

News: Pre-Podgressive – Behind The Scenes

Hi or as we say here at bejbi, Tja, tja bloggeeeen!

I’m here to try out this blogging phenomena that every body has been talking about for the last ten years. If you don’t know me, I’m Tatsumi Suzuki behind the monthly podcast, #Podgressive (remember the very important trending topic hash-tag there!). Podgressive.com and bejbi.se has been working closely since January and it has been fun and at the same time challenging to maintain a ”red line” between bejbi and the podcast.

What’s the fuzz about this blogging stuff then, Tatsumi you are a dj and a podcaster!

Well, the idea behind this is to get the listeners/subscribers (That means you!) backstage and to the production very heart of each podcast. I will share my thoughts that has been in my head during the past month, releases, djs, the production and all the work behind this show.

Summer 2012

Let’s call it a big fail! This summer has been the worst one in ages. It has been raining pretty much each and other day and the temperature has been way below normal for us in the Nordic countries. It’s depressing because of our hard, cold and dark winters. We need sun and a couple of months when we can re-charge our batteries! However, the summer usually brings us some parties and iv’e been to some. I have also been djing in Holland at the Luminosity pre-party with FSOS (Future sound of sweden) and in Finland, up north in a town called Vasa. Not to mention our own party at Slakthuset, ”Podgressive Summer Jam” together with bejbi!

This is how I create #Podgressive!

I usually listen to several podcasts and try to search the web for new tunes. When I find something interesting, I always have a note on my Macbook where I gather all the tracknames so I can get it later. It’s more or less a couple hundred tracks to scrum through every month. Belive me, it takes time to get together a decent podcast!

I’ve got some questions about my setup and to be honest, I’m confused! My left foot is standing on modern technics with multiple decs, sync, endless fx and multiple software routed together. Then on the other hand I got my right foot on the classic beatmatching and endless track searching in my dj case. I’m for the moment doing both classic CD to CD beatmatching with my two Pioneer CDJ-400’s and with my Allen & Heath XONE:4D or the mixer together with Traktor scratch. To be honest, man I don’t know! I think my dream setup would be 3 x Technics 2010 mk5 with timecoded vinyls together with a solid mixer. Allen & Heath (Xone 92) + Pioneer RMX1000 or Pioneer DJM900-Nexus. I just love the feel of vinyl. That’s where it all started for me and it would be great to bring it back but modernised and digitalised.

#Podgressive EP034

This months show will be a nice blend of house, techno, progressive and trance. We will have a very talented guest from Finland with roots in house music and also a great upcoming artist from Sweden, from the FSOS (Future Sound Of Sweden) collective.

I have been listening to pretty much techno these past weeks and dude, there are quite awesome releases in that genre at the moment! There has been some great trance releases as well, so hopefully you will like the finalized podcast that has resease on Friday 28th September at http://podgressive.com.

TOP10 – September 2012

We have come to the NEW monthly section where I have listed 10 great tunes that have been my most played tunes for the month. It doesn’t matter if some tracks has been out a while, it’s just what get’s me going right now. I hope that you will find some interesting stuff there and it goes something like this…

  1. 1. He has done it again! Eric Prydz said on his latest podcast that this tune has made the croud go absolutely mental on his gigs this summer! And I totally understand that. This tune has every element you need for a perfect summertune! As I noticed on his tracklisting, this will probably be released on the Eric Prydz alias, not as Pryda. Hopefully he will have this released soon and I’m looking forward to get this into my sets as well. ENJOY!

  2. Salome De Bahia – Outro Lugar (Prok & Fitch 2012 Festival Mix)
  3. Orjan Nilsen – PhireWorX (Original Mix)
  4. Super 8 & Tab – Fiesta (Tom Fall Remix)
  5. Fehrplay – Incognito (Original Mix)
  6. Jaytech Feat. Steve Smith – Stranger (Kyau & Albert Remix)
  7. Solarstone, Giuseppe Ottaviani – Falcons (Solarstone Extended Mix)
  8. Joseph Capriati – Gashoulder (Original Mix)
  9. Manic Brothers – Custom Illusion
  10. Ben Sims Feat. Blake Baxter – I Wanna Go Back

Don’t forget the release of #Podgressive EP034 on the 28th September (Share + Feedback = <3 ) and I will be back here with a new pre-podcast blog post 19th October!

See ya!

Classic FTW: Markus Schulz & Anita Kelsey – First Time

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ-0T55WxPM&w=680&h=510]

This weeks article is focused on one of the true pioneers when it comes to trance and progressive. With his weekly radioshow, Global DJ Broadcast, his label, Coldharbour Recordings and worldwide residecies, he’s one really busy DJ/Producer. I’m ofcourse talking about the one and only Markus Schulz. The track featured in this article is the legendary track First Time with vocalist Anita Kelsey and was co-produced by Austin Leeds. (Buy on Itunes)

Lyrics:

It was a brief encounter
you passed among us
a strange sensation
you left behind
countless stories
a new beginning
the journey started
from here

It was a stolen moment
my senses taken
no misunderstanding
could be declared
countless stories
a new beginning
the journey started
from here

it was my first time
first time
it was my first time
from here

Goosebump-points:

01:00 when the music fades
02:01 when the vocals start
03:15 when the chorus starts
04:29 when the chorus starts and the music fades
05:00 when the slo-mo-drums starts while wailing

German-born Markus Schulz emigrated to the US with his family at an early age and started making music in the beginning of the 90’s. His first release, Plastik Traxx Vol.01 (together with CL. McSpadden) was relesaed in 1994 but it wasn’t until 1998 and the release of You Won’t See Me Cry that got international response. The release, first released in 1998 on Plastik Records and later in 2000 licensed to UK label Eve Records.

While releasing tracks under his real name, Markus also released some really awesome material under the names Dakota, Himmel, Mikulas, Clinch & Dino. This article will be focused mostly on releases under his own name aswell as his darker, more progressive side, Dakota.

Under the early years, Markus released 3 Dakota-singles, Swirl (1999), Lost In Brixton (2002) and Frozen Time (2002) but the main focus on Dakota came in 2009 with the album Thought Become Things which spawned 7 singles. But we´ll get to that abit later.

After the success of You Won’t See Me Cry came a break where he focused on Dakota and it wasn’t until 2005 that the second single, First Time (with singer Anita Kelsey) came out.

Under 2003 and 2004 Markus Schulz co-produced 3 tracks under Markus Schulz presents Elevation. The first one, Clear Blue is one of my alltime-classics, especially the Intro Mix.
The progressive monster made a huge impact on me and most of the world. It was also remade with vocals by Justine Suissa under the name Somewhere (Clear Blue).

The second single, Largo is another progressive monster which uses most of the elements that made Clear Blue great.

The third track was Somewhere (Clear Blue) with Justine Suissa on vocals. I love the track but prefer the non-vocal version.

In 2004 Somewhere/Clear Blue got signed to A State Of Trance, a label owned by Armin Van Buuren which Markus met after being signed to the same agency, David Lewis productions agency.

Armin asked Markus to start a record-series with progressive tracks so Markus started on his compliation series, Coldharbour Selections. It was first after releasing volume 1-3 on Electronic Elements that Markus set up his own label, Coldharbour Recordings which is a sister-label to Armin Van Buuren’s Armada Music.

The name Coldharbour comes from his old production-base in London’s Coldharbour Lane.

The new label made a huge impact on the progressive scene, especially with signed artists like Santiago Nino, Rex Mundi, Mark Otten & Niklas Harding just to name a few.

The single, First Time with singer Anita Kelsey from 2005 was the first of his own tracks to be signed to the label. The same year also saw Markus first album, Without You Near which was followed by the track with the same name. The track was a collaboration between Markus, Departure and Gabriel & Dresden.

The 2006 single, Never Be The Same Again (with singer Carrie Skipper) was the next own release which was followed by the non-vocal tracks Fly To Colors in 2007 and The New World in 2008. The New World is a really pumping track which I really love. All tracks was featured on the second album, Progression from 2007.

It was also in 2007 that Markus started his weekly radio show, Global DJ Broadcast.

2008 also saw the release of Perfect (with singer Dauby) aswell as the fabulous collaboration with Andy Moor with Daydream. I really love the track, especially the Benya remix.

The next collaboration with Departure came the same year with Cause You Know which had an amazing Nic Chagall remix.

2009 only saw the single, Do You Dream as all focus was on Markus’s alter ego, Dakota.
The Dakota-album, Thought Become Things held 7 singles. What do you say about Johnny The Fox, Chinook, Sin City, Mr Cappuccino, Steel Libido, Koolhaus & Roxy’84. All major tracks on the darker, deeper progressive side of Markus. Dakota is like Markus dark and sinister twin!

The 2010 album, Do You Dream focused on the lighter side of Markus again. With some major singles as Dark Heart Waiting (with singer Khaz), the remake of Cass & Slide’s old track, Perception (with vocals by Justine Suissa) and Not The Same (with Jennifer Rene).

With the original to Perception being an all-time favourite, the new remake ain’t half bad. I remember hearing Markus playing his version at a club and I got major goosebumps. The version he played was the non vocal version. I really love Justine Suissa’s voice but it’s nothing compared to the original vocal version by Cass & Slide and singer Naimee Coleman.

In 2011, Markus released the second Dakota-album, Thoughts Become Things II which so far has spawned the singles Sinners, Saints/In A Green Valley, Katowice and Sleepwalkers.

2012 has some major tracks stored up for us. Both Markus Schulz and Dennis Shepherd – Go and Markus Schulz & Ferry Corsten – Loops & Things will be released later this summer.
Loops & Things is a remake of Jens’s old track from 1994 which I really love. The new remake is slower, more to the progressive side of trance and will be a huge hit!

There has also been some huge remixes over the years and here is a selection of some of the more memorable ones:

2003 Motorcycle – As The Rush Comes
2003 Jewel – Stand
2004 Filterheadz – Yimanya
2004 Airwave – Ladyblue
2004 Deepsky – Talk Like a Stranger
2004 Space Manoeuvres – Stage One
2005 Departure – She Turns
2005 Ridgewalkers – Find
2006 Kyau & Albert – Are You Fine?
2007 Joop – The Future
2008 Sia – Buttons
2008 Mike Foyle – Bittersweet Nightshade
2009 Cosmic Gate – Sign of the Times
2009 Ferry Corsten – Brain Box

As a DJ, Markus has gained major crowds and played at Ultra Music Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event, Nature One, Dance Valley, Love Parade, Global Gathering & Trance Energy just to name a few. He’s been holding a top 10-position on the established DJ Mag top 100 the last few years which itself is a sign that people love what he do.

Markus has been active in the music business since 2004 and spawned some major tracks/remixes over the years. Since 2004 and onwards his name has been synonymous with quality releases and remixes. My guess is that Markus and his label, Coldharbour will continue releasing quality tracks for many years to come, just listen to the new collaboration with Ferry Corsten for Loops & Things.
Markus future looks bright and sounds really awesome!

New Releases: Chase from FSOS

Chase

The upcomming singer/songwriter Chase, who recently signed a record deal with FSOS Records released three teasertracks on his Soundcloud today.
It’s three whopping hot summer tunes collaborated with producers Christian Rusch, Johan Vilborg and Kim Swärd.

Chase was born and raised in the small town of Lewisburg, West Virginia located on the East Coast of the US. Since the age of 5 Chase has studied piano, and has independently played guitar for the last 3 years. Something sparked at a young age when he realized that he could combine his instrumental talents with vocals to create his own original songs. Chase has been writing, self-producing, and performing his own original work since the age of 14. Music is a passion of his, and he hopes that someday he can reach out and heal the world with his craft.
